From Lackluster to Landmark: The Pollinator Mural Project

The Pollinator Project is a growing public art series by Chicago muralist Jessica Brackett, transforming overlooked exterior walls into large-scale works of art inspired by native wildflowers, bees, butterflies, and the ecosystems that sustain them.

Designed specifically for commercial buildings, neighborhood spaces, and highly visible exterior walls, each mural responds to the architecture of the site while becoming part of a larger story about pollinators, habitat, and the natural world.

This is a concept image for the project. Actual murals will be adapted to the space and the wall.

Have a blank wall that could become something people remember?

The Pollinator Project turns underused building surfaces into distinctive public landmarks.

Rather than treating a mural as decoration added to a wall, Jessica develops each installation around the architecture itself. Butterflies may move around a corner.

Bees can travel across multiple elevations. Native flowers can emerge from the base of a building while pollinators appear to search for them across the structure.

The result is a site-specific mural that feels integrated with the property rather than simply placed on top of it.

The imagery is rooted in Jessica’s background as a classically trained painter and her longstanding fascination with botanicals, insects, birds, and the natural world. Painted at architectural scale, these subjects become immersive, unexpected, and highly visible.

A mural series designed to grow

The Pollinator Project is envisioned as an expanding series of public artworks throughout Chicago, the Midwest, and beyond.

Each installation can stand alone, but together the murals create a larger visual story about the relationship between pollinators and the native plants they depend upon. For property owners, developers, chambers of commerce, architects, designers, and community organizations, the project offers an opportunity to commission artwork that is both visually striking and connected to a broader public art initiative.
